Caprock Canyon State Park and Trailway is located 100 miles southeast of Amarillo. It is off the grid, quiet, and not crowded (compared to the other nearby attraction: Palo Duro Canyon). Caprock Canyon is part of the Caprock Escarpment and has a herd of bison that you can come across during the Spring-Fall months. It is camping friendly – great weekend getaway!
My favorite trail to take is the Haynes Ridge overlook trail to Fern Cave then Upper Canyon trail back to the parking lot. There are large elevation changes and some butt scooting involved to get across boulders – but a fantastic glute workout! I have had a wild hog run across my path and have had bison block the road before – plenty of wildlife!
Fern Cave (Dried out, in the dead of winter, it is prettier in the Fall!)
