Congestive Heart Failure – Is it Right or Left CHF?

How do you distinguish right sided heart failure from left sided heart failure?

Left sided heart failure is more common and it associated with these 3 main symptoms:
1) Dyspnea on exertion
2) Cardiac Dilation
3) Pulmonary edema * the “L” in pulmonary can help remind you of the “L” in Left

Right sided heart failure is associated with the these 3 main symptoms:
1) Peripheral Edema
2) Jugular Venous Distention
3) Hepatic Congestion (nutmeg liver)
